Founded by the great Catalan painter, Antoni Tàpies, who along with his wife, donated most of the works of art that line the gallery walls the Fundació opened its doors in June 1990 in the former building of the Eitorial Montaner I Simon publishing house. Situated in an area of grand gestures, the aim of the gallery has always been apparent, to cooperative with new ventures of contemporary art.

Hosting a combination of temporary exhibitions, lectures and film seasons, not to mention their range of publications which accompany the periodic shows of their complete collection of work by Antoni Tàpies. The gallery is an open space new realms with ceased to exist.
