Primavera Sound

Summer is gradually approaching, and for Barceloneses, that can only mean one thing; fiesta time.

Impressive sound on the Rayban stage for the XX

Primavera Sound festival opened its gates this year from the 27th- 29th of May, pulling out the stops to make its 10th year anniversary one of the most intense and invigorating yet.

Friday night at Pitchfork

Once again the city expanded its borders to allow an influx of curious tourists who left the great corners of Europe to experience this unique spectacle. An unusually grey sky didn’t manage to dampen the spirits of the magnitude of music fans, equipped with their categorical knowledge of cutting-edge indie rock as they revelled late into the night amid some electrifying performances from an international line up.

As always, Parc del Fòrum was a worthy venue with its glorious privilege of a well crafted concert block with a Mediterranean coastline throw back. One of the most impressive stages proved to be the Rayban, hosting a number of more acoustically sensative goups such as Coco Rosie or the XX.  The amphitheater setting combined with a high level of attention to sound quality brought out the best in the XX on the first night, warming the crowd up for what was to come over the weekend.

Crowds gather at the ATP Stage

As usual the Pitchfork and ATP stages provided a smaller and more intimate environment for some of the most interesting new talent to shine. Bands from all nooks of the world made the most of what was an unmissable opportunity to impress new fans with some imposing performances.

The headliners, with their proven track records, were reserved for the grand San Miguel stage where fans saw the return of a few acts from previous years after being requested by internet forum users. We should raise our beer bottles and bow down, to those whose choice of indie heroes; The pixies, was rewarded with streams of edgy-hits from their extensive back catalogue.

Other headliners included clashing electro-pop act The Pet Shop boys, who performed their Pandemonium tour on Saturday night to a huge crowd right after The Charlatans had performed one of their classic albums in its entirety to great avail.

So as the curtain closes on another year of  alternative rock for the city of Barcelona we thank our lucky stars that we have been blessed with such a fine array of talent.  Until next time, goodbye Primavera and hello Verano.
