In October 1989, a small theatre in the neighbourhood of Gracia opened its doors for the first time. Its aim was to publicise the work of unknown playwrights, as well as promote local Catalan performance, by experimentation with a varying degree of specialisation.

2009 saw the Sala Beckett celebrate 20 years of achieving this aim to local acclaim, in which time the space has enjoyed putting on a range of theatrical performances from all over the globe.
